Staircases have always held a certain fascination for me, for reasons that not even I am clear on. I think it may be that they can be symbolic of so many things - growth and decline, height and depth, progression and regression, etc. - or their precise geometric natures. Perhaps it relates to their necessity in the days before elevators. Whichever it may be, shots like these always make me sit back for a few seconds and wonder about all the people who once walked those stairs, up and down, down and up, and where they were going, who they were meeting. And to see a staircase deteriorating, going back to its base elements, reminds me that all works of man, however strong and however celebrated, won't last forever.
